Description

Dan Hammer received 2017 Pritzker Award for his work to make environmental information more accessible to journalists. He earned is PhD in Environmental Economics from UC Berkeley, where he was a Fellow at the Berkeley Institute for Data Science. Dan works at an environmental and tech nonprofit that he founded alongside two other Berkeley alumni, including the former CEO of The Nature Conservancy and The Moore Foundation. He previously served as a Senior Policy Advisor on data infrastructure in the Obama White House, as well as a Presidential Innovation Fellow at NASA. Dan was the Chief Data Scientist at the World Resources Institute, where he co-founded Global Forest Watch -- an online platform to monitor deforestation from satellite imagery. He cofounded a venture capital-backed satellite image analytics company, which is successful long after he left -- likely because he left. He is adjunct faculty in the public policy school at Georgetown University, and the environmental sciences department at the University of San Francisco. He graduated with high honors in mathematics and economics from Swarthmore College, where he was a Lang Opportunity Scholar and volunteer firefighter. Dan spent almost two years in the South Pacific as a Watson Fellow, building and racing outrigger canoes.
